"It’s not always easy, but I trust the process and know that every season has a purpose."
Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a beauty professional?
I actually thought I was going to be a hairstylist—that’s what I originally went to school for. I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry in some capacity, but once I started exploring different areas, I discovered skincare was where I truly thrived. There was something about being hands-on with the skin and seeing real transformations that spoke to me. Over time, I realized this wasn’t just a job it was my purpose. Skincare gave me the ability to heal, empower, and help others feel confident in their own skin.
Was there a specific moment or experience that motivated you to start your business?
Yes, without a doubt. Working in corporate America made me feel boxed in. I was limited in my growth, my income, and even my time. I felt like I was working hard but not truly building anything of my own. I wanted more flexibility, more freedom, and the ability to create something meaningful not just for me, but for my son too. That drive for ownership, impact, and legacy is what pushed me to take the leap and start my business.
What key strategies have you used to grow your business from the ground up?
Two things: consistency and staying true to my niche. I’ve always focused on corrective skincare, especially conditions like hyperpigmentation and acne, and that clarity has helped me attract the right clients. I also prioritize real relationships—clients aren’t just transactions to me. I listen, educate, and build trust. On the backend, I never stop learning. I invest in continuing education, mentorship, and systems that help me operate more efficiently.
Can you describe a turning point or milestone that significantly contributed to your business’s growth?
COVID was a huge turning point. While it was a scary and uncertain time for many business owners, for me, it became a season of growth. I was able to pivot and focus on areas I hadn’t had time for before like, selling retail products, virtual consultations, and refining my offerings. The shift forced me to become more innovative and intentional, and as a result, my business didn’t just survive it truly started to thrive.
How do you manage the challenges of keeping a work-life balance?
I’ve learned to prioritize myself and set boundaries. I make time to rest, recharge, and pour into my personal well-being because I know that if I’m not full, I can’t give to others whether that’s my clients, my family, or my team. It’s a constant balancing act, but protecting my peace is non-negotiable.
What keeps you motivated, especially on the slow months?
My purpose. I remind myself why I started. My son, my passion for skincare, and the impact I want to make. I also reflect on how far I’ve come and use slower seasons to regroup, plan, and pour back into my business. It’s not always easy, but I trust the process and know that every season has a purpose.
What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your journey so far?
One of the most fulfilling things has been helping other estheticians grow their businesses. Whether it’s through mentorship, sharing resources, or just offering encouragement, I love being able to support others on their journey. Watching them succeed especially when I’ve played a small part in that its so rewarding.
Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of what you’ve achieved?
Moving into my current location was a major moment for me. I went from a 100 sq ft room to a 2,700 sq ft space that’s a huge leap! It wasn’t just about the physical space; it represented hard work, growth, and belief in myself. It was confirmation that everything I had poured into this business was paying off.
Where do you see your business heading in the next five years?
Right now, I’m in a reflective season, really seeking clarity about what’s next for both myself and Luminous. I’m open to growth, expansion, and new opportunities, but I’m also allowing space for God to lead. I know that whatever’s coming will be aligned with my purpose and values.
How do you set your business apart from others in your niche, and what makes it unique?
I specialize in corrective skincare with a strong focus on hyperpigmentation and acne. My results speak for themselves. Clients come to me because they’ve tried everything else and nothing has worked. I take a realistic, personalized approach, combining professional treatments with education and lifestyle support. It’s not just about a facial; it’s about transformation. That level of care and commitment sets me apart.
What advice would you give to women who are just starting their journey in the beauty industry?
Just start! and be consistent. Don’t wait until everything is perfect because it never will be. You’ll grow through experience. Stay focused, keep learning, and surround yourself with people who believe in your vision. Trust yourself and your timing.
Are there any resources or tools that have been particularly helpful in your success with running your business?
Absolutely. Having a strong support system has been everything. From business colleagues to friends who help behind the scenes, I’ve learned that you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) do it alone. Also, investing in business tools like scheduling software, client management systems, and ongoing education has helped streamline my operations and keep me growing.
What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from your experience in the beauty industry?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity and perseverance go a long way. This industry can be competitive, but when you stay true to who you are, put in the work, and trust your journey, success will come. Not always overnight…but always on time.
