Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a beauty professional?
Growing up, I didn’t like the way my grandma did my hair, so I wanted to learn how to do it myself. She eventually gave me the responsibility, and before I knew it, I was doing my sister’s and cousin’s hair too. I loved the feeling of being able to do my own hair exactly how I wanted and, even more, I loved making others feel beautiful.
Was there a specific moment or experience that motivated you to start your business?
When I realized I had a real passion for doing hair and wanted to make it my career, I knew I had to turn it into something long-term. I never liked working for other people, so my goal was always to build something of my own and create a living doing what I love.
What key strategies have you used to grow your business from the ground up?
Social media has been my biggest tool. I consistently posted, engaged with people online, and built a strong presence, especially on Instagram. Staying visible and connecting with others played a huge role in my growth.
Can you describe a turning point or milestone that significantly contributed to your business’s growth?
A major turning point was during the pandemic when my sister created my website, and I started selling retail products. Brand photoshoots also helped boost my business. Another big milestone was getting all my legal paperwork in order, making my business fully official.
How do you manage the challenges of keeping a work-life balance?
It’s a daily struggle, but I have to stay organized because I don’t have another choice. Being a mom is just as important as running my business, so I prioritize both and find a way to make it work.
What keeps you motivated, especially during slow months?
My long-term goals keep me going. I stay focused on the future I want for my kids and the life I’m working to create for us.
What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your journey so far?
The genuine connections I’ve built with other women. I’ve been a part of major milestones in their lives, just as they have in mine, and the opportunities that have come from these relationships have been so rewarding.
Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of what you’ve achieved?
Rebuilding my clientele in Florida after living in Maryland my whole life was a huge accomplishment. It was challenging, but I was able to grow my client base quickly, which proved to me that I could make it anywhere.
Where do you see your business heading in the next five years?
I want to transition more into education while hopefully owning a salon suite. I still plan to work behind the chair occasionally because I genuinely love what I do.
How do you set your business apart from others in your niche, and what makes it unique?
I stay true to myself and focus on my specialization. I emphasize a luxury experience while keeping things relatable and building genuine bonds with my clients.
What advice would you give to women who are just starting their journey in the beauty industry?
Prioritize your health early on. The physical demands of this industry aren’t talked about enough, but if you don’t take care of yourself from the start, you’ll feel the effects sooner than you think.
Are there any resources or tools that have been particularly helpful in running your business?
A booking site has been essential. My sister has also been a huge help with branding, ensuring my business looks professional at all times. And of course, social media! It acts as my live portfolio and, aside from word of mouth, is my biggest source of clientele.
What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from your experience in the beauty industry?
Your skillset will get you clients, but professionalism and customer service are what will keep them coming back.
